With the development of technology and the improvement of safety standards, the flammable safety cabinet industry has also ushered in a new international standard - EN 14470-1:2023. This standard puts forward more stringent requirements for the design, manufacture and testing of flammable storage cabinets, aiming to improve fire safety performance and protect people's lives and property.
EN 14470-1:2023 Overview
EN 14470-1:2023 is a standard for hazardous chemical storage cabinets developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It specifies the fire performance requirements of chemical storage cabinets to protect stored chemicals and other sensitive materials in the event of a fire.
Main changes
Compared with the EN 14470-1:2004 version of the standard, EN 14470-1:2023 brings the following major changes:
More stringent fire tests: The test requirements for fire resistance time have been increased, and the minimum starting fire resistance time has been increased from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
Enhanced thermal insulation performance: Requirements and physical testing methods are put forward for the fire and thermal insulation performance of the internal materials of the cabinet.
New mechanical tests: New requirements are put forward for the materials and construction of the cabinet to improve its overall mechanical and fire performance.
Fire cabinet design points
According to EN 14470-1:2023, the design of fire cabinets needs to consider the following points:
Material selection: Use materials that can withstand high temperatures, such as special steels and fireproof materials.
Insulation design: Use effective insulation layers to slow down the internal temperature rise.
Sealing performance: Ensure the sealing of the cabinet to prevent smoke and flames from entering.
Structural stability: The cabinet structure should remain stable even at high temperatures.
Testing and certification
Fire cabinets must pass rigorous real fire combustion tests to prove that they meet the EN 14470-1:2023 standard. The tests include:
Fire resistance test: Fire environment test in a high-temperature furnace at 1049℃ to test the fire resistance of the cabinet.
Insulation test: Evaluate the speed and degree of temperature rise inside the cabinet.
Stability test: 40,000 reciprocating cycle tests to ensure that the cabinet will not suffer structural damage.
